Tonga has a very limited tourist infrastructure and there are only a handful of holiday resorts around the islands. More common are small family run guesthouses but these are often very simple rooms with shared bathrooms and limited electricity.

Tonga has only a handful of small beach resorts, the largest having less than 20 bungalows. There are no large hotels or international chains in the country. Tonga has several small resorts in idyllic secluded settings, usually on private uninhabited islands with guests staying in hand crafted traditional bungalows. Tonga also offers excellent value for money compared to most of its south pacific neighbours.

Apart from a few resorts around the islands, there are several self catering bungalows where guests can do thei own cooking. There are no restaurants outside of Nukualofa and Neifu towns.

On Tongatapu, Haapai and Vavau there are small budget beach lodges where guets are accommodated in basic bungalows, sometimes without electricity and mostly with shared bathrooms.

There are several large town hotels with over 50 rooms in both Nukualofa Town (the capital) and in Neiafu on Vavau Island where affordable clean rooms with private hot water bathrooms and air-con are available.

In both Nukualofa and Neiafu there are more cheaper motel apartments which are ideal for longer stays or as a base for exploring the islands.

There are lots of small family run guesthouses around the islands, with some upmarket bed and breakfast home stays in Nukualofa Town and more basic guesthouses in the outer islands usually with shared bathrooms and limited electricity.

There are few specific backpacker hostels in Tonga with most backpackers staying in family operated guesthouses.
